Liliia Mochula is a Ukrainian artist based in Rome. Educated in both Ukraine and Italy, her practice brings together the Eastern European sensitivity to memory and material with the Italian tradition of form, space, and sculpture. Through painting and sculpture, she explores wood as a metaphor for the human condition, transforming its grain, knots, and traces of time into reflections on relationships, lived experiences, and the memories each person carries within.
She grew up in Ternopil, Ukraine, where daily contact with nature nurtured from an early age her fascination with trees and their ability to preserve time within their material. After studying at the Ternopil School of Art and the Ternopil National University, she continued her education in Italy, earning a degree in Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. During these years, she developed a deep interest in the work of Giuseppe Penone, whose poetic exploration of material became one of the principal influences on the evolution of her artistic language.
In 2015, she was awarded First Prize at the international sculpture competition Scultura da Vivere, organized by the Peano Foundation, for her work Points of View, which is now permanently installed in a public space in Cuneo, Italy. Her work has been exhibited in Italy, Germany, and Ukraine, and her research continues to evolve at the intersection of contemporary art, architecture, and interior design through works that create a dialogue between nature, memory, and space.
